Founded in 1984, it is part of a federally protected marine area called Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Every year about two million people visit this fresh ocean water aquarium that offers interactive and underwater exhibits with over 600 species of plants and animals, such as sharks, jellyfish, sea horses and sea otters. The city of Monterey is located on the central coast of California and has about 28,000 inhabitants. It has many seafood restaurants and bars in converted factories. Besides the Monterey Bay Aquarium, other main attractions include Fisherman's Wharf, Cannery Row, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and Monterey Old Town Historic District.
