Outside this country is known as Dracula Castle, a popular tourist destination in the historical region of Transylvania. It is associated with the home of character Dracula in the novel of the same name. Even though Dracula's writer Bram Stoker never visited Romania, the fortress set on a hilltop is the only one in Transylvania that resembles the characteristics of Dracula Castle. Also, Bran Castle might have been an inspiration from descriptions available to the novelist. The magnificent medieval structure is open to visitors and houses a museum with furniture and other items of Marie of Romania, the last queen of Romania, who lived there.
