About this Webcam

The Spider Crab webcam provides an incredible up-close view of the Japanese giant spider crabs in the exhibition Into the Deep: Exploring Our Undiscovered Ocean at the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California , United States . These are the largest crabs in the world, with ten legs that can stretch up to 3.8 metres (12 feet) from claw to claw. This marine crab has a carapace about 40 centimetres (16 inches) in width, and the whole body can weigh up to 19 kilograms (42 pounds). On this camera, you will also see a model of a sperm whale carcass at the bottom of the floor (called whalefall). When a whale dies, its carcass sinks to the oceanย floor, where itsย nutrient-rich remains attract deep-sea creatures, such as the spider crab, as well as contribute to the whole ecosystem.
